Announcing planned HOT Skills Symposium: ................ Using the HOT Skills Wheel

Summary:
The HOT Skills Symposium
will focus on
how science
teachers
of all levels encourage students
to improve higher order thinking

skills necessary to
good botanical research.

The symposium will include ideas on using HOT skills for closing achievement gaps both between non-scientists and scientists and between intelligent non-achievers and achievers.

Dr. Shipman will present: Using the HOT Skills Wheel to improve Botanical Education and help close the Achievement Gap. Shipman has taught science from K-12 through University and has worked in industry thus brings a broad scope of experience in science education to the symposium. She has modified and developed a tool which was originated by a group of elementary school professionals for lesson planning to include higher order thinking skills in their teaching. Research on the tool, introduced by Dr. Shipman to high school and college students and affectionately known by the students as the, "HOT Skills Wheel," will be presented. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools and ideas for improving higher order thinking, especially using botanical concepts, together with their written summary of the same, which may be collated into a publication. Five additional participants will present on HOT skills in botanical education. A discussion will follow.

Something you can do about the oil spill and preventing some of the environmental damage that can result from oil spills:

So many times I've seen students who have been discouraged about environmental issues. They haven't realized that each of them can do many things to improve the environment. People are very resourceful in solving problems. I believe that is the message to convey to students. Using the HOT Skills Wheel TM brings students through several levels of critical thinking (Contact me to arrange training for faculty and students on the HOT Skills Wheel TM.) Problem solving results from using higher order thinking skills and then taking action. Here are some links to get you started in solving one global crisis: the current oil spill. Having such deep-thinking skills, the HOT Skills, and knowing that each of us can take action in solving global problems gives hope for achieving both sustainability and a peaceful World.

Use Reach Reading TM (Workshop Inquiries) and come up with research to back up other decisions about what you can do to help the environment. You might also want to look at the book Mycelium Running for ideas on not only cleaning up oil, but, also cleaning water before it is returned to the environment.

The current oil spill gives students the opportunity to understand the relevancy of their science education. It helps them understand why Reach Reading TM, science literacy, and science education are so important to their abilities to solve and prevent global problems. I challenge you to empower your students. Show them they can use their skills to take positive action to solve problems, even those of a global nature. We can show them the resiliency of the human spirit and give them pathways to solve and prevent future global problems. How can you use science to help you make decisions?

In the United States, and elsewhere, many people are often concerned about their weight, how can you use science to evaluate whether you want a macrobiotic diet, a lap-band ventura or anything in-between?

Evaluating any decision regarding your health and lifestyle requires sound scientific principles. People are often aware of processes of scientific method(s). Some students, and grown-ups, too, will think of these methods in science class, but forget to use them in every day life. Making sound decisions leads to better health and improved longevity.


Across grades K-12, researchers have focused on ways that students investigate, model, discuss, and understand increasingly sophisticated mathematics and science concepts.

Because of global warming, alternative energy, water use and other complicated social and environmental issues, people need to rely on basic science skills like evaluating data.
As a result of the societal and personal needs, decision making is being increasingly included in school curricula, for example,

But, it takes more than "book-learning" or even internet-learning to make decisions. Higher order thinking skills are essential. Let's look at a sample set of educational standards on this topic:

The standards, like the ones shown above, often suggest the end result for students. But how do they get there? How do we, adults, get there when we make decisions? Whether picking shampoo, or choosing the best presidential candidate, whether selecting a diet, exercise routine or surgery, we (students and mentors alike) need good decision making skills. We need to think deeply.

I have found that encouraging high school students to use the HOT Skills wheel has helped them to develop the skills necessary to be able to make decisions well.

Knowledge: Do you know what a lap band is?
Journey Lite specializes in Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding which is also known as LAGB or the LAP BAND System procedure. The LAPBAND Adjustable Gastric Band is designed to help you lose excess body weight, improve weight-related health conditions and enhance quality of life. It reduces the stomach capacity and restricts the amount of food that can be consumed at one time.
There's a quote from some of the LAPBAND advertising . It tells some information about the LAPBAND. This information falls in the "knowledge" category of thinking.

Another "knowledge" skill is to "list." Can you list products or lifestyle changes that compete with the LAPBAND? If you used the internet, or pamphlets at your doctor's office or from a medical or nursing text to list products and lifestyle changes that could acheive the same goals of the LAPBAND, you would still be in the knowledge category.

Comprehension: Do you understand the ideas gathered so far? The types of thinking you can do if you understand are:
  • interpretation of facts, compare, contrast
  • order, group, and infer causes
  • predict consequences
  • understanding information
  • translation of knowledge into new context
  • grasping meaning

How would you interpret the facts? Could you make a chart comparing the LAPBAND to competitors products? Could you talk to people who had the procedure and to people that made other life style choices and compare their answers?

Analysis: Do you see patterns? How are parts organized? DO you recognize any hidden meanings? Can you identify components?
Application: You can apply the data when you use information, methods, concepts,and theories in new situations. Solving problems by using required skills or knowledge is also, "application." For example, did you apply math skills that you already have to analyze the data.
Synthesis: Can you generalize from given facts, relate knowledge from several areas, predict, draw conclusions and use old ideas to create new ones? assess value of theories, make choices based on reasoned arguments, verify value of evidence, recognize subjectivity, compare and discriminate between/among ideas.

Helping Students use a HOT Skills Wheel™ to enhance Higher Order Thinking on Botany (and other Science) Topics

Building higher order thinking skills is important to studies in botany. Participants in this symposium will make a H.O.T. Skills Wheel™ and use it in small groups to study some botany so they will have first hand experience to share with their own students.

Participants will also access Plants Cafe and other plant-oriented websites for use in developing lessons.
After trying the wheel for various botany topics, participants will share their experiences. After returning home, participants are encouraged to use the new H.O.T. skills wheels™ with their classes and submit their results for possible publication in text or on the web.

Participants should bring a journal article or portion of text that they would like to incorporate into their H.O.T. Skills Wheel™ lesson, and may bring colored pencils, markers or crayons (6 light colors), other art or music supplies(guitar, if you'd like to use it in your lesson, for example), and a folder.

Participants should be prepared to purchase booklets cost $12.00 each at the workshop.

Welcome to Science!

Science is such an important part of life. Today, many young students don't like science, and, yet, they use science every day. Nation building requires people that think scientifically and analytically. It requires people skilled in deep thinking. The skills are commonly known as higher order thinking skills or HOT skills.

Much of education has been about copying and memorizing and spewing back information, according to many. Today, however, much learning is hands on. Science is a wonderful example of hands on learning requiring HOT skills.

Forget about education for the moment and take the case of scientists, themselves: A scientist builds on history of science and must know "facts" discovered earlier, however, he or she then designs and experiment, does the experiment, collects data, analyzes the pure data, then reflects on that data in context of previously known "facts" and the society of the day. The scientists reflection is in the discussion and conclusions of a laboratory report. The data are kept separately, in the results part of a laboratory report. In this way, data can always be available for re-evaluation in context of newer eras and additionally known "facts" in the future.

So, welcome to science. Hands on, data accumulation, evaluation and analysis and then: CREATIVITY. How can science be utilized to solve the world's problems, or, alleviate distress. How can science make life more fun and enjoyable.

Now, let's return to students. How can a group of students that are not in love with science develop enough of a scientific view of the world that they create manufacturing centers, reduce global warming, feed the hungry, cure and prevent illness, prevent war and solve other challenges? Well, they, and we (for we are all students), can.

Let's have more botany, more chemistry, more biotechnology, more micro, more medicine... And, let's have more of the supporting areas: the arts, math, history, social science, politics, among others...Let's have all of these in integrated looks at science. And, science-types, too, will gain from these other fields.

For example, in Charles Dickins', A Christmas Carol, can you think of science. In Wikipedia, you can find this link and go from there to find other resources linking science research and the poverty found in life: "wiki" (Now, some people won't use Wikipedia, but, I find it is a good starting point, especially if you use your own HOT skills to evaluate the information.)

In this way, the non-scientists will feel welcome in science and humanity can progress at it's best because we will all be well rounded enough to build more understanding and achieve greatness. People will understand why we fund research and scientists will learn how science is integrated in the minds of other people.

H.O.T. Skills

Higher order thinking skills are under development in young minds! What does that mean? In Elementary school, some children already have higher order thinking skills. Parents and teachers help them to develop more. By high school, students should be capable of developing their own higher order thinking, as should adults. We all need to think to solve problems, make decisions, create things, analyze data and perform the tasks our various roles require.

Some students make it all the way through high school without developing their H.O.T. skills, however. These students are readily identified because they think the teacher is not teaching if he or she doesn't tell them what to think...what the answer is. This teacher, though, is the true teacher. The one who shows students how to use their own brains. The one who says, "You can do it."

Evaluate---> Create

Use it and use the HOT Skills wheel as you read it. Use your background knowledge and your value system to evaluate what it says. You can do the entire post, or, just a paragraph. But, try to probe deeply into the ideas presented. Relate them to teaching/learning science.

Next, create something out of that reading and evaluation. Perhaps a video or a paper expressing key ideas and how you can use them to solve the, "No Child Left Behind," riddle. (Because as the NCLB stands, too many children are being left behind.) Or perhaps, you can create a painting or a ballet to convey a suggestion for public policy related to science education. Or, maybe, you have come up with a great lesson plan idea and you want to prepare a dynamic class for next week's science lesson.

Here are some ideas from the HOT Skills link above written earlier in this blog. You can use these ideas together with what you already know to help you evaluate the Chapman post and then create or synthesize your new ideas or ways of presenting based on what you read. What will you create?

Experiment Ideas: Plant Pigments Link (USA to Japan to USA again...)

An excellent way to learn science is by being a scientist as you learn. That means participating in the process of science. People are moving away from the idea of "scientific method" because (to some) the idea didn't convey well enough that the method consists of several processes and that these processes are exciting. Whatever skills you have, the process of science can use them...art, music, attention to detail, observation, writing, perseverance, ...many, many skills lead to well done science. The idea is to try some experiments. Plant pigments provide an opportunity for such investigation.

I clicked on the link in the left hand column for the Japanese-based Society for Practical Education in Biology (http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/jissen/english.htm), which you can find on this blog, and landed here: http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/glossary/gloss3/pigments.html back in the USA at Berkeley. That activity is what led to this exercise in the study of plant pigments. The internet can be an aid to your research, but, you still need to think deeply about what you find. For example, the Berkeley site gives a lot of information and is a great starting place. Let's see what you can do to become a self-directed learner from there. Pick out ways of learning that support your developing an interest in your studies. As you learn, step up to higher order thinking, which will keep you motivated and interested. Use
your talents. For example, if you are a theater buff, use the plant pigments to suggest colorful costumes, or, create a play about plant pigments. A math whiz? What do wave lengths of light have to do with the pigments. Maybe you just love science labs. How could you extract the plant pigments? Could you use them for another chemical process? Art? Help convey the results you get in a beautiful way. Let's get started.

Take a look at the information on
plant pigments and see what questions come to mind. What experiments does it make you think about? Post a comment if you have any questions.

Much of the information is
definitions. Can you describe the words? Do you recall them when you close your eyes? Could you label chemical structures of the pigments with the right name? Great. These are Knowledge-based skills...Skills of remembering. You might also gather information you didn't know before:
The development of the most brilliant red coloring of
autumn is commonly ascribed to the action of frost.
This explanation is probably incorrect, for careful
observation indicates that the color is most intense
when a moderately low temperature is accompanied by
bright sunshine. In warm, cloudy autumns the colors
are more likely to be dull, with the yellows predominant.
In other seasons, when cold weather is delayed, autumn
coloration may be brilliant and near its climax before
the first frost occurs. That sunlight is important in
the development of the red pigment in many plants may
be shown also by an examination of a leaf that has been
closely shaded by another. The pigment stops so abruptly
where the shade begins that a perfect print of the upper-
most leaf results. An abundance of nitrogen in the soil
prevents anthocyan[an] formation in some plants. This
fact may explain in part the greater brilliancy of colors
seen on hillsides and river bluffs than on adjoining
floodplains.

Can you paraphrase the definitions? (The word paraphrase means to say, or write the information in your own words.) Paraphrasing shows comprehension or understanding. Other skills that show comprehension or understanding include: matching, giving examples, interpreting, summarizing, classifying, illustrating and explaining. Inferring, rewriting, and distinguishing are other ways of thinking about plant pigments that show comprehension. Can you organize information that you read so you can remember it?

Application (Applying) is another step up the thinking skills ladder. If you are using the HOT Skills Wheel TM, you can see that you've moved to another section. When you can apply the knowledge that you've learned, you can dramatize it, use it, solve with it, and, produce with it, for example.

Analysis is another form of higher order thinking that you can apply to your study of plant pigments. Compare, analyze, distinguish, infer, analyze, classify, differentiate, point out, subdivide, survey. Think more deeply! What can you infer from the colors of leaves and fruits? Can you differentiate among different plant pigments? How? (Add your own questions and responses. Keep track in your lab book or journal.).

Synthesis, or "creating" includes verbs like: compose, design, produce, organize, originate, combine, plan, hypothesize, role play, create, develop, construct, invent. Can you make a hypothesis and design an experiment to test out your ideas on plant pigments? If so, you are thinking well. Congratulate yourself. If not, learn by doing: try to create a hypothesis to test and then, after checking with an adult and having supervision, do the experiment. You need to check for safety reasons and for budget. Just like real scientists (which you are), you will have safety, space and budget constraints. But don't worry, you can come up with other ideas that fit the constraints and challenges you run in to. Meeting such challenges makes science fun.

Analyze your data and then, evaluate
it. Judge whether your experimental design was good as you did it, or , if you would like to modify and repeat your experiment. Do your experimental results support community policies? Can you summarize your experiment into an abstract? Have you considered various ways of looking at the data you collected? Did you critique your own experimental design and experiment? Evaluation is a type of higher order thinking. Again, congratulations.

As you reflect on plant pigments, go back and re-use any of the higher order thinking skills. Use these skills again, as needed to achieve your goals.

Students aim for Mars: Miko Teaching a New generation of Space Buffs

Christopher Miko is doing a great job creating student interest in science, especially space science.

He made some comments on standardized tests, too:
Miko said he is currently rewriting his curriculum to focus less on acing standardized tests. Here's what the above-referenced article stated:

“I don’t feel the way I’m required to teach in the classroom is the best way to be teaching. It’s so standardized test-oriented,” he said.

While the Manhattan Beach Unified School District is the fifth-highest performing district in the state, it doesn’t mean students understand the information, he said.

It is true that higher order thinking skills (HOT skills) are needed to, "know," any subject, but, standardized tests do get a bad rap quite often. These standardized tests cover just the starting material. Students should not be afraid of them. We should not contribute to fear of test-taking.

That being said, the 4-H concept of, "Learn by doing," is a wonderful concept to apply to science. I believe that is what Miko's teaching and comments show.

As for his students, carry on. Keep up the good work. Think deeply. Try using HOT skills.

Try, "Evaluation."

When you hear or read or see something, can you evaluate it? Can you tell if there is a bias or are ideas presented neutrally? Can you tell if the ideas presented are supported? Can you rank the value of the ideas presented according to your own value system?

Higher Order Thinking Workshop a Success

Shipman led a dynamic group of scientists and educators through activities leading to exciting science lessons...Lessons where students learn, under guidance, how to direct there own science learning.
